Trained at the Munich Art Academy, Stefan Szczesny's meteoric rise began in 1981 with the group exhibition 'Rundschau Deutschland', at which the 'Neue Wilde' (New Wild Ones) – including Luciano Castelli, A.R. Penck, Elvira Bach and Martin Kippenberger – established themselves as a new art movement. Their goal was to turn away from abstract painting and rediscover expressive figuration for themselves. During his fellowships at the Villa Massimo in Rome, the Villa Romana in Florence and in Paris, Szczesny sharpened his eye and his feeling for colors and forms before finally finding his center of life and work in Saint-Tropez.
